Torbay Film Club is a not-for-profit group run by volunteers who want to see the finest independent and world cinema, in Torbay.

Films are shown on a monthly basis and are open to members and non-members. We’re keen to make the screenings as sociable as possible, and before and after the films there will be an opportunity to have a drink and a chat about the film, whether you come on your own or with friends.

The films we are showing were voted for democratically by the committee, and we’ve made sure in the season there is a mixture of English language and subtitled films, with at least one ‘classic’ (pre- 1985) film and a factual film. We’ve also got an evening of short films from around the world, as well as the final evening where the members will choose the film that is screened.

We look forward to welcoming you and sharing with you our enthusiasm for films.

Please see the Membership section for details of how to become a member.

ABOUT THE COMMITTEE

We are always looking for additional volunteers who have some time to spare and would like to get involved.  If you would like to get more involved please drop us an email at admin@torbayfilmclub.co.uk.

Here are a few thoughts from the Torbay Film Club committee:

My worst film experience was actually the only film I have ever wanted to leave half way through. It was ‘The Grinch’ with Jim Carey but I was next to the wall at end of long, long row of children and couldn’t get out. I can’t think why I had even gone other than it was winter in Guernsey and had been raining for weeks and it was a last resort to fill an external Sunday. You take what you can get on the Island!

Favourite film quote: "I am drowning in a sea of confusion".  Which film?  [answers on a postcard to...]  I love all films: mainstream Hollywood blockbusters, quirky independents, subtitled films etc etc. My favourite film is Like Water for Chocolate - I still cry every time I watch it!

I was raised in a flat behind a local newspaper office where my parents worked. The place was immediately opposite the town picture house and we benefited from a complimentary pass to the cinema as we did all their advertising. So I was introduced early to the Disney classics, Bambi, Snow White moving through to Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia in my early teens. Generally I’ll watch anything but the Film Club showings are really worth watching.

Favourite cinema experience: Cinema Paradiso in Wanaka, New Zealand, where you can take a glass of wine into the cinema, watch the film on comfy sofas, and pre-order a thai curry for the intermission!

In the 1960’s I was a cinema House Manager for Rank. One of my favourite “Cinema Moments “ was at Plymouth Odeon I would cue the start of the major films such as Sound of Music and Dr. Zhivago, on the huge curved screen which showed 70mm films. The very pinnacle of film presentation which has never been equalled since.

I was introduced to foreign and independent films as a youngster, at the Cameo cinema during the Edinburgh International Film Festival and especially enjoyed Fernandel and Jaques Tati. Recent films that have interested and entertained me are The Painted Veil, Amelie and films featuring Daniel Autieul.

I was really attracted to film by Orson Welles - his best film "A Touch of Evil" - his best quote - " I hate television, I hate it as much as I hate peanuts. But I can't stop eating peanuts."  Later I was attracted to Francois Truffaut and his films "Jules et Jim" and " Les Quatre cent Coups".  Films that I dislike are any which feature Joan Crawford as she always reminded me of mothers in law!!

We are grateful to the South West Group of the British Federation of Film Societies, Torquay Museum and Torbay Council for their support.
